Licence Categories

B+E

 

B+E entitlement allows you to drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes, towing a trailer up to 3.5 tonnes.

To take the B+E test you need to hold a full car driving licence (Cat B).

C1

C1 allows you to drive a goods vehicle up to 7.5 tonnes (with a trailer up to 750kg). The process is the same as to obtain a Cat C licence, but with the test in a smaller vehicle.

To take the C1 test you need to be at least 18, hold a full car licence (Cat B), and a provisional C1 licence. You will also need to have taken the LGV theory tests.

C1E

C1E allows you to drive C1 vehicles towing a trailer over 750kg with a combined weight of up to 12 tonnes.

C

Cat C allows you to drive rigid goods vehicles with a gross weight of over 7.5 tonnes (with a trailer up to 750kg). If you take this test you will also gain C1 entitlement.

To take the Cat C test you need to be at least 18, hold a full car licence (Cat B), and a provisional C licence. You will also need to have taken the LGV theory tests.

C+E

The C+E licence allows you to drive a Cat C vehicle towing a large trailer. This includes articulated lorries, and drawbar combinations.

To take the C+E test you need to have passed the Cat C test, which will give you provisional C+E, and have your licence back from DVLA.

D1

A D1 licence allows you to drive a minibus with up to 16 passenger seats, up to 8 metres in length (with a trailer up to 750kg).

D1E

D1E allows you to drive a D1 vehicle towing a trailer over 750kg, with a combined weight of up to 12 tonnes.

D

Category D allows you to drive buses and coaches with more than 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).

D+E

D+E allows you to drive buses and coaches towing a trailer over 750kg.
